How Geodes Are Formed

How the Hollow Forms

How the Crystals Grow Inside

Once the hollow exists, crystal growth begins. Silica-rich groundwater enters the cavity and begins depositing minerals on the interior walls. The first deposits are typically a thin layer of chalcedony or agate, which forms the outer shell of the geode's interior. This layer is what gives geodes their characteristic banded appearance when sliced.

As mineral-rich water continues to enter the cavity, crystals begin to grow inward from the chalcedony layer. The crystals grow slowly, adding one atomic layer at a time, and they grow toward the center of the cavity where there is open space. This is why geode crystals always point inward: they are growing toward the available space.

The size of the crystals depends on how slowly they grew. Slow growth in stable conditions produces large, well-formed crystals. Rapid growth produces smaller, more numerous crystals. The most spectacular geodes, with large, perfectly terminated crystals, formed in conditions of exceptional stability over very long periods.
